In the introduction to this book, Gaiman tells us that his first introduction to Norse mythology was through Marvel comics. Hopefully, this book’s existence will prevent that from happening to a new generation of children.
(My first introduction was through this book, a thing for which I am immensely grateful: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3…)
The retelling of these classic tales is lively and entertaining, but it’s also a fairly ‘straight’ rendition – it presents the mythology in its best light, but isn’t a ‘novelization.’
On thing that really struck me upon revisiting these stories was the intensely different set of ethics and ideas about morality and correct action that inform these myths. Extremely interesting.
Recommended as any and every kid’s introduction to this pantheon – or for anyone with an interest in the subject.
